I have never been fond of military service, because I don’t like guns. One story in the novel was inspired by an experience McArdle had while on patrol with British soldiers. What tipped the scale is the sense of authenticity communicated successfully by an author drawing from relevant personal experience as a retired American diplomat who herself had been posted in northern Afghanistan. The story line of the developing romance of the main character and one of her British colleagues helps the flow and does not detract. But faarishta, like McArdle, Angela is summoned to serve for a year in an isolated British Army compound in Afghanistan, where she finds new purpose, new friends and even new love.

The book makes me wonder what will become of the Western-style infrastructure “improvements” that can not be sustained, and whether appropriate technologies such as solar cooking, which Farishta advances will ever be formally advocated in foreign aid programs to Afghanistan and other countries that have chopped down and consumed everything that will burn.

I ignored them and began taking slow, measured breaths. I was pulled into the story from the outset and did find the book eminently readable — even memorable — in spite of some stiffness in the relationships among the characters and an ordinary literary style. It’s been fascinating to see the varied opinions that GoodReads reviewers have about my novel. The author introduces some of Afghanistan’s ancient history a French archeaologist is digging up Bactrian gold nearby.

Her passion for this endeavour never really shone through to me, perhaps because her forays into this area were touched on quite superficially in my opinion. I really enjoyed this book. Search for ” Farishta ” on Amazon.

‘Farishta’: Afghan Fiction From The Foreign Service

Rai Bahadur is a wealthy man who lives in a palatial home with farishhta grand-daughter, Pinky, and grandson, Raju. This was a compulsive read for me.

A well-written, entertaining and informative story set in Afghanistan.
