Spring Inspiration for Dark Days

I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather recently. A combination of long days of working and the relentless Devonshire wind and rain has really sent my mood spiralling downwards and out of my control. Instead of planning, organising, de-cluttering and the cleaning that I’m usually preparing myself for at this time of the year, I’ve been languishing on the sofa with my attention drifting from one worry to the next.

On Friday evening I stood in the kitchen, staring blankly at my cupboards. Even food had lost its appeal, the vice I often turn to in moments of despair. I knelt down upon the floor, opened the cupboard to retrieve a pan and was greeted with a sweet, soft, floral scent. The scent oozed from a jar towards the back – a dark, cold place where the draft whistles through the gaps and in that jar sat a voluptuous bulb, a long elegant green stem and the sweetest glimpse of pink.

A single Hyacinth bulb. A hint that seemed to say, “No-matter how dark it seems now, light and warmth is coming.” That bulb has now transformed into a gorgeous stem of delicate, pink flowers – sat upon the bookshelf next to where I usually sit and work. And it got me thinking, perhaps just being able to see the wonderful array of colours and light and the suggestion of scents that are just around the corner, might get me through the last few weeks of winter. Therefore to Pinterest I went, in search of Spring Inspiration where I could feast my eyes and lighten my soul.

    • Intoxicating is definitely the word. I simply can’t resist the heady perfume! I’d have a load in every room if I could get away with the kids not knocking them over!

  1. What a lovely reminder that lighter times are on their way. I’m a hibernator too and really feel the effects of the cold and dark on my mental health, so the thought of imminent spring is helping me a lit at the moment, too.

    • Absolutely Jayne. As much as I love the cold of winter, having a break in the rain for some glorious blue skies and sunshine (like yesterday) really lifts my spirits.

    • There’s something so innocent and pure about Snowdrops don’t you think? I must get some bulbs to plant for next year!

  2. I think it has been a particularly long and dark winter which I also struggle with. Stay strong. The shorter days are coming and I shall be checking out your pinterest board between now and then. Next year shall we do a road trip to California for the winter?

  3. Gorgeous – and you’ve just reminded me to go and check the one that’s in our under stairs cupboard!

  4. This inspired me to buy a lovely bunch of daffs yesterday that are now sitting pretty on my kitchen windowsill and making me think of spring xx
